Taipei's Transportation Center

Today we visited both the Taipei Metro's High-Capacity Operations Control Center and the Taipei Traffic Control Center. Both facilities seemed not only brand new (because they were), but also placed more emphasis on just security and traffic flow.

The Taipei Metro showed us a short video before introducing us to their new control center. The video, though a bit cheesy at parts, seemed to place a lot of attention on the quality of the metro system. This was only further proven when we actually rode the metro that night. I have been on multiple metro systems throughout the world, and not a single one has compared to Taipei's. The level of cleanliness and priority placed on comfort was astonishing. I was told that multiple seats were colored differently for older people, stickers given out for seat priority, and even signs asking people to give their seats up to women, children, and the elderly. This, more than anything, really showed the length Taipei has gone through to create such and incredible metro system.

The level of security was also very impressive from the start. The High-Capacity Control Center really showed off how much control Taipei has in ensuring the safety of its travelers. In addition to that, we noticed multiple zones for only women after a certain time at night that are covered in guards and video cameras. This is something that really impressed me and I wish would be implemented on a more global scale.

The Traffic Control Center also showed us the various methods they have, or plan to have, implemented throughout Taipei. Once again, they showed a priority in making sure transportation was the most convenient for the travelers. These measures included online traffic reports, rent-able bicycles, and even EasyCards to help pay for transportation, food, and
parking. This all culminated into what seemed like a very well run system. Taipei seems to have one of the best metro, traffic, and all around transportation systems I have ever seen.
